Peters, Stabenow Announce $8.49 Million Federal Grant for the Detroit Department of Transportation

Funding Will go Towards Upgrading Detroit’s Bus System

DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) today announced that the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) will receive a $8.49 million federal grant to purchase new buses, equipment and upgrade bus stations. This funding comes from the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program.

“It is critical that Detroit has a robust transportation system in place that can provide critical busing services for residents, visitors and businesses in and around Detroit,” said Senator Peters, who supported DDOT’s grant application. “I was proud to help secure this grant that will help improve the quality of service for riders so that Detroiters can better depend on safe, quality transportation services.”

“A reliable public transportation system is a critical part of Detroit’s revitalization and the region’s economic growth,” said Senator Stabenow. “This grant will make sure residents can get to their jobs, grocery stores and doctor appointments. I will continue to advocate for the resources needed for a public transportation system that people in Detroit and across the region can rely on.”

“This grant will allow us to modernize our fare boxes on our entire fleet and sets the stage for a more seamless regional transit system,” said Angelica Jones, Interim Director, Detroit Department of Transportation. “We are deeply appreciative of the work our congressional representatives have done to secure this funding for DDOT.”

The FTA’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Programs provides funding to replace, renovate and purchase buses, equipment and bus-related facilities in communities across the country. Resources are provided through formula allocations and competitive grants. More information about Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Programs can be found at https://www.transit.dot.gov/bus-program
