Peters Announces Former CISA Director Krebs to Testify at Wednesday HSGAC Hearing

Hearing Called by Chairman Johnson Risks Undermining Public Trust in Election Process & Poses Danger to American Democracy and National Security

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced today that Christopher Krebs, former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), will testify at a committee hearing on Wednesday on election security and national security. The hearing, convened at the direction of Chairman Ron Johnson (R-WI), will likely underscore false narratives that seek to undermine public trust in the outcome of the 2020 election.

“I am appalled by many of my colleagues’ choice to help spread the President’s lies and false narratives about the outcome of the 2020 election. This isn’t simply another partisan political issue – repeating these falsehoods erodes the public’s trust in this fair and free election, lays the groundwork to weaken the public’s trust in future elections, emboldens our adversaries, and undermines our democracy and the peaceful transition of power,” said Senator Peters.

Peters continued: “While some officials may frame this hearing as a matter of simply getting to the truth and ensuring every claim of an irregularity is heard and addressed, the real goal of this hearing is to help a defeated presidential candidate in his last-ditch effort to cling to power despite the undeniable fact that the American people have chosen Joe Biden to serve as the next President of the United States. At a time when our founding principles and our most sacred democratic values are under attack, we should be defending the sanctity and security of our elections – not giving a bigger platform to those who wish to sow chaos in our democratic process.”

The hearing will be livestreamed on the committee’s website here.
