Peters Joins Colleagues in Introducing Legislation to Reverse Devastating Health Care Cuts in Republicans’ “Big Bad Bill”

Bill Would Restore Health Care Coverage for Millions of Americans and Protect Tax Credits for Health Care

WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) joined his Democratic colleagues in introducing legislation to repeal the devastating health care cuts in Republicans’ so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” The Protecting Healthcare and Lowering Costs Act would reverse Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid, which will take away health care from millions of Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Michiganders. The legislation would also permanently extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits that help millions of Americans afford health care but are soon set to expire due to Republicans’ inaction.

“The bill that Republicans just passed will rip health care away from hundreds of thousands of Michiganders, and balloon our deficit by trillions of dollars, just to give tax breaks to billionaires,” said Senator Peters. “This legislation would restore health care for Michiganders whose coverage has been put in danger and protect resources that help hardworking families afford the health care they need. I’m proud to support this bill and will continue fighting for every Michigander’s ability to access quality, affordable health care.”

Peters took to the Senate floor last month to voice his opposition to Senate Republicans’ bill that will take away health care and food assistance from millions of Americans. Peters has also spoken out about how the bill will add trillions to the national debt, further raising everyday costs for American families.

The entire Senate Democratic caucus signed on to cosponsor the legislation. Additionally, the bill has the support of the American Civil Liberties Union, AFL-CIO, Children’s Hospital Association, Communication Workers of America, National Alliance for Caregiving, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), and National Disability Rights Network.
