Peters Presses DHS Leadership on Streamlining Traveler Screening

WASHINGTON, DC – In a recent hearing, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, pressed Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan for his commitment to address concerns raised by travelers who have been subject to intrusive and time-consuming security screenings. Government watch lists and screening processes are critical tools to identify threats and ensure the safety of travelers, but Senator Peters has frequently heard from communities in Michigan who have regularly faced serious disruptions and challenges while traveling.

“Michigan is home to vibrant communities from around the world, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect when traveling,” said Senator Peters. “We all agree that we must take measures to keep the traveling public safe, but I am deeply concerned that some of my constituents have endured excessive and possibly unnecessary secondary screenings. The Department of Homeland Security must address these concerns directly and work to make travel for all Americans safe, secure and efficient.”
