Peters Secures Federal Funding to Strengthen Public Safety, Improve Child Care Access in West Michigan

WASHINGTON, DC – As a member of the Appropriations Committee, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) secured federal funding for West Michigan communities in bipartisan legislation recently signed into law. The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act provides new, full year funding for the federal agencies and programs covered by the bill, including funding for local projects to strengthen local emergency response and improve access to child care. Peters helped craft and advance this bipartisan bill out of the Appropriations Committee.

“These investments will make a difference in West Michigan, helping local first responders keep our communities safe and expanding access to much needed child care,” said Senator Peters, a member of the Appropriations Committee. “I’ll keep working in a bipartisan way to support local projects that strengthen our communities.”

The bill includes resources secured by Peters for high-impact, local public projects in West Michigan, including:

New Fire Truck for City of Big Rapids: The bill includes $378,000 for the City of Big Rapids to purchase a new fire truck, which will improve community safety and be used to better protect both people and property.

Improving Wildfire Response in Montcalm County: The bill would provide $245,000 for the Lakeview District Fire Department in Montcalm County to purchase equipment needed to adequately protect the community and property from growing threats of wildfires.

Expanding Access to Child Care in Montcalm County: Peters secured $225,000 to expand the Central Montcalm Public School’s Early Childhood Center in Stanton to provide more childcare and educational services for the community.
