Peters, Stabenow Applaud Biden Administration Decision to Extend Health Care Special Open Enrollment Period Through August 15th
Extensions Gives Michiganders Additional Opportunities to Secure Health Care Coverage During COVID-19 Pandemic
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) applauded the announcement today by the Biden Administration to extend the special open enrollment period for Americans to secure health care plans through the Affordable Care Act through August 15th. The special enrollment period was initially opened on February 15th and scheduled to run through May 15th. During the COVID-19 crisis, millions of Americans have lost their health insurance. The decision to extend the sign-up period provides Michiganders without insurance additional opportunities to secure the critical coverage they need during this unprecedented public health crisis.
People in Michigan looking to sign up for health coverage should visit healthcare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596.
“The last thing Michigan families should be worried about is whether they can access quality health care during this pandemic – on top of affording to put food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads,” said Senator Peters. “This decision is great news and gives Michiganders additional opportunities to secure the coverage they need. I’m additionally pleased that the American Rescue Plan that I helped enact takes additional steps to lower costs for these plans. I encourage Michiganders who need coverage to sign-up immediately. I will keep fighting for Michigan – working to lower health care costs and ensure access to quality health care during this pandemic and in the years ahead.”
“Michigan families shouldn’t have to choose between getting care for COVID-19 and being left with thousands of dollars in bills that they’re unable to pay. President Biden’s extension of the health insurance marketplace enrollment comes at a critical time for our state. Also, the American Rescue Plan will make the health insurance plans even more affordable. President Biden knows that families in Michigan are in desperate need of help right now and need access to affordable, comprehensive health coverage,” said Senator Stabenow.
