Peters Statement on AV 3.0 Guidance for Self-Driving Vehicles

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and co-author of the bipartisan AV START Act, released the following statement on the Department of Transportation’s Automated Vehicle 3.0 guidance:

“Self-driving technology will transform the future of transportation, helping to save thousands of lives and improving mobility for consumers. I’m pleased that the Department of Transportation is continuing to build on previously issued guidance to advance these revolutionary technologies, and I will be reviewing the details of this document.

“This guidance underscores the need for Congress to enact a strong federal framework to guide the continued safe development and deployment of self-driving vehicles. I look forward to passing the AV START Act, which will ensure that the U.S. remains at the forefront of vehicle innovation and safety, and help ensure the Department of Transportation has the information and expertise needed to establish updated safety standards for self-driving vehicles in the long run.

“Finally, I appreciate the input of the many agencies that contributed to this announcement, and I will be following their efforts to address the impacts self-driving technology will have on our transit networks, highways, infrastructure and our workforce. These are positive steps to preparing for the self-driving future.”
