Peters Statement on Homeland Security Funding Bill

WASHINGTON, DC –U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the need for a clean, full-year funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security:

“At a time when America faces serious threats to our national security from adversaries across the globe, there should be no question that Congress must provide funding for the Department of Homeland Security. From cybersecurity and counterterrorism to border security and emergency preparedness, the Department of Homeland Security is vital to our nation’s safety and far too important to be tied to unrelated policy matters. And as the agency responsible for facilitating safe trade and travel, blocking funding to the Department of Homeland Security could also cause disruptions in international travel, including at the Detroit-Windsor border and airports across the state, which could negatively impact Michigan’s manufacturing, agriculture and tourism industries.

“As a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, I am committed to ensuring that Americans and our homeland remain safe and protected. The Senate must pass a clean bill to fund these critical national security operations, because when it comes to the safety and security of our homeland, Congress should allow no uncertainty and work together to pass a bill to keep the Department of Homeland Security open.”
