Peters Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

“Today we celebrate the legacy of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by honoring his call to take action to secure a better and brighter future for our nation. Dr. King was deeply committed to pursuing equal opportunity, but he taught us that progress comes from the hard work of everyday Americans striving to make our society better.

“Over the last year, we have seen many of our country’s most cherished democratic ideals and institutions threatened – from attacks on the freedom of the press and assaults on the independence of our judiciary to efforts to restrict access to the ballot box. Now more than ever, we need Americans from all walks of life to follow Dr. King’s example by taking action, serving our communities and standing up for the rights we all hold dear. Together we will bring our nation closer to Dr. King’s goals of equality, justice and opportunity for all people.”
