Peters, a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Questioned Top Defense Officials on U.S. Strategy in Syria
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a former Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, today released the following statement after a closed-door Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the situation in Syria, which included testimony from Department of Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley:
“I am increasingly alarmed at the lack of strategy coming from the Trump Administration as it relates to the situation in Northern Syria. President Trump’s decision has threatened to undo years of progress in the fight to eliminate ISIS and has made a complex region of the world far more difficult.
“By abruptly abandoning our allies, President Trump has sent a chilling signal to all those around the world working with us or looking to work with us in the future: that we may not always have their back. Setting this dangerous precedent undermines our ability to protect our national security and keep us safe.”
