WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement after voting in favor of the legislation, Republicans voted down, to extend crucial Affordable Care Act tax credits that help lower health care costs for millions of Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Michiganders:
“Today, I voted to lower health care costs for Michiganders. The bill I voted for would extend the critical Affordable Care Act enhanced tax credits that help millions of Americans afford their health care.
“These tax credits have been one of the single most successful tools to lower premiums and ensure every American can access the care they need. But because Republicans made drastic cuts to health care, and refuse to extend this essential support, Michiganders are experiencing massive price hikes for the exact same coverage they currently have. In some cases, families are seeing their premiums double or even triple, and many are having to make the gut-wrenching decision to go without health care coverage at all next year. And we know that when fewer people have insurance, it drives up the cost of health care for everybody.
“That’s why I voted for this commonsense bill to just simply extend the existing credits and provide some financial relief to folks who are shopping for their health care plan as we speak. Health care is a fundamental right, and I won’t stop fighting to make it more accessible and affordable for Michiganders.”
