PHOTOS: Peters Addresses Metro Detroit Nonprofit Community, Highlights Essential Role Nonprofit & Philanthropic Organizations Play in Michigan

During the Speech, Peters Discussed the Impact of Recent Trump Administration Actions on Local Communities and Nonprofits

DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) provided the keynote address at an event hosted by Detroit Philanthropy, which brought together Metro Detroit’s robust nonprofit community. During the speech, Peters highlighted the essential role that nonprofit and philanthropic organizations play in Michigan communities. Peters also discussed recent actions taken by the Trump Administration that will impact nonprofit organizations, and reiterated the importance of federal and local partnerships for addressing the challenges facing Southeast Michigan.

“In Metro Detroit, we are blessed to benefit from a dedicated nonprofit community that has always stepped up to help our neighbors,” said Senator Peters. “As elected officials, I believe we should be working to support our local nonprofits, who understand the most effective ways to meet the needs of the folks they serve every day.”

“We are honored to welcome Senator Peters as keynote speaker for this important conversation,” said Rachel Decker, President of Detroit Philanthropy. “His dedication to strengthening communities through collaboration makes him an ideal leader to help frame the challenges and opportunities we face together.”

During the speech, Peters highlighted steps taken by the Trump Administration to freeze more than $410 billion in federal funding enacted by Congress to help local communities and nonprofits deliver essential services to hardworking families. This includes funding allocated to support Michigan’s food banks, provide essential housing assistance, bolster community safety initiatives, and more.

Peters also underscored how the impacts of these unprecedented funding cuts have been intensified by the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” that Republicans recently passed and President Trump signed into law. This law will take away lifesaving health care coverage from hundreds of thousands of Michiganders. The law also made devastating cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a vital resource that helps Michigan families put food on the table.

“As the Trump Administration continues to make cuts to the resources meant to help our families succeed, we know more and more Michiganders will be looking to our hardworking nonprofit community for help,” said Senator Peters. “That’s why I won’t stop fighting to ensure you all have the support you need to carry out this essential work.”

More than 200 leaders from the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors attended the event, titled “Meeting the Moment: How Funders and Nonprofits Can Work Together.”
