Peters Recognizes Juneteenth Independence Day

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today released the following statement in recognition of Juneteenth Independence Day, which is celebrated each year on June 19th to recognize the day that African-American slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their emancipation:

“Today marks Juneteenth Independence Day, the day when the last remaining slaves were finally given the news that they were free, nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. As we observe Juneteenth, we reflect on the atrocities that slaves were forced to endure and mark the end of a terrible chapter in our nation’s history.

“Juneteenth is an important reminder of how far our country has come over the last century and a half, but we must not forget the struggle for equality persists. As we commemorate this day, I urge my fellow Michiganders to join me in renewing our commitment to the pursuit of justice, equality and opportunity for all Americans.”
