Peters Underscored the Importance of Medicaid & Community Programs like Head Start Amid Trump Administration Attacks on Hardworking Michigan Families

LANSING, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) visited Capital Area Community Services (CACS) in Lansing during his annual motorcycle tour to highlight the local impacts of the Trump Administration’s attacks on programs that hardworking Michigan families depend on, including cuts to Medicaid and food assistance. Peters specifically pushed back against the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” that Republicans recently passed into law, which will take away health care coverage from hundreds of thousands of Michiganders, including many of those who utilize CACS services like Head Start. Peters was joined by CACS Executive Director Miguel Rodriguez, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor, and Zhamilya Yessirkepova, Policy Council Chair at Capital Area Community Services Head Start.

“Plain and simple, the harmful bill my Republican colleagues passed into law will strip lifesaving health care from thousands of hardworking Michigan families, just to give a tax cut to billionaires,” said Senator Peters. “Michiganders deserve better. Whether it’s Medicaid coverage or the vital services offered by our partners here at Capital Area Community Services, I won’t stop fighting to protect the resources that help our families succeed.”

“Since the passage of the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill, I’ve heard from families and non-profits and others in Lansing who are worried about what it could mean for them and their loved ones. Those who depend on Medicaid to receive their health care find themselves in uncertain times, and those that assist people of need are scrambling to find the needed funding,” said Lansing Mayor Andy Schor. “I appreciate Senator Gary Peters for fighting back against these policies that are causing harm and uncertainty in Lansing and throughout the nation.”

“At our agency, we serve 1,047 head start students that are Medicaid eligible, and rely on it for comprehensive coverage,” said Zhamilya Yessirkepova, Policy Council Chair at Capital Area Community Services Head Start. “Medicaid, when coupled together with Head Start enrollment, plays a pivotal role in ensuring Lansing families can thrive. I want to thank Senator Peters for your support and for taking the time to hear how important these programs are for our community.”

Last month, Peters helped introduce legislation to repeal the devastating health care cuts included in Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act. In June, prior to the bill’s passage, Peters took to the Senate floor to voice his opposition to the bill and shared stories from Michiganders, including in Lansing, who will be harmed by this law.

This year marks Peters’ ninth motorcycle tour. This year’s tour also includes stops in Fenton Township and Battle Creek. Peters is an avid and long-time motorcycle rider who founded the bipartisan Senate Motorcycle Caucus in 2017.
